Just had a guy in a red suit call in (managed to get a photo of him) and he stuffed his bag full of bricks and pavers for all the DIY girls and boys out there!

He said he'd only be giving them to the good girls and boys - we checked the list (he checked it twice) and it looks like our customers have been naughty and nice!

Fix up that pesty area

Small "nooks" on your property can be a real pain. You know the ones I mean.

A narrow strip between the house and b0undary fence. The back corner up behind the shed.

They never get any sunlight and drainage is poor so the area is always wet and weeds are plentiful.

An easy solution

Have you ever considered killing the weeds with roundup, digging up the whole area and laying pavers or stones? - no weeds, improved drainage, looks great.

The Titans are Tough And Here To Stay

As you can tell by the ABC Brick Sales helicopter we are big Titans fan, so yesterday was a big day for us all here.

Watching the Titans don their colours for the first time was great. And what a thrill to be in the crowd amongst 40,000 other excited screaming fans.

Shame about the result, but the Titans showed they are made of tough stuff and put on a great show. We can expect big things from them this year.

Do-it-yourself Pavers

Pavers are a great do it yourself option especially when you are on a budget.

The beauty of pavers is that you can lay them in sections as you have the time or funds. I have friends who have been paving their driveway and side path for about a year now. Each holiday season they buy some more pavers and prepare and lay another couple of metres of pavers.

They are having a great time and keeping the costs down as well.

Why did they choose pavers over the quick concrete option?

Good question.

They have a pipe that runs directly across the end of their driveway. If the pipe ever blocks and they need to access it they can just pull the pavers up and lay them back down when the pipe problem is resolved.

If they had a concrete driveway and had to access the drain removing the concrete would be a difficult and labour intensive job. And at the end they would have to redo the concrete, which would never look the same as the original concrete.

Pavers are always a great option.

Moldy Pavers

Moldy Pavers

Mold on your pavers is unsightly, however it is not uncommon on pavers that have either poor drainage, are constantly moist, are in an area that doesn't get enough sunlight or a combination of all of the above.

The remedy is to try to correct the causative problems. Correct the drainage problems and trim trees to encourage more sunlight.

Household bleach can be used to remove mold from your deck sand (follow manufacturers instructions and test on a small area first) and a power hose will remove stubborn surface mold.

Remember though, that if the causative problem is not resolved the mold will return.

Pavers or Concrete

A lady came into the shop the other day asking for some advice.

She was planning on redoing her old asphalt driveway but didn�t know whether to concrete or pave as she lives near the ocean and was concerned about salt damage.

It is true that salt will damage concrete and concrete is prone to staining. Pavers whilst requiring more initial preparation to be laid are not as prone to staining and are generally not affected by salt.

Pavers stand the test of time

Pavers tend to hold their own and look good for a long time. Concrete develops that aged look quite quickly.

New ABC Service Launched

Regular visitors to our main showroom in Labrador may have noticed the brightly covered ABC Bricks chopper 'parked' in the car park.

As an avid helicopter pilot I've had the chopper for a while now and have long thought of the best way to utilise the chopper - a Robinson R44 Raven II.

I use it to help brand our business, make people aware of our sponsorship of the Titans and to tow a huge ABC Brick Sales banner I had made up.

Launching ABC Heli - Banner Towing, Sightseeing & More

So we proudly launch ABC Heli - a banner towing, sight-seeing and charter helicopter company on the Gold Coast.

We've already had a number of firms take up the banner towing - after all, everyone notices the huge banner being towed across the skies!

Avoid the heat

When planning home rennovations it pays to consider working conditions. Outdoor jobs, like paving, are fairly manual in nature and you often find yourself working in areas with little or no protection from the sun.

Now is a great time to pave

If possible choose a cooler time of year to do your paving. Now is a great time to pave here in Australia.

When paving on the hotter days avoid paving in the middle of the day when the sun is at its hottest and remember to slip, slop and slap, and drink plenty of water.

Make your paving experience a good one.

One of the most common questions we get asked is "What is the best size pavers to use?"

As a general rule, it's best to match the paver with the area. That is, if you're paving a large area, use big pavers. And small pavers for smaller areas.
