Brick can survive decades with minimal attention. It’s long lasting, but it does occasionally need some TLC. The better condition your brick is in, the better it will function, and the more appealing your home will look from the curb. So how can you tell if your brick needs some love?
If you notice bowing in your brick wall, then chances are it needs some repair. This usually happens when bricks absorb moisture which causes them to expand. If this problem is not addressed, eventually the corners will crack and can lead to structural failure.
White Powder on Bricks
The white powder that sometimes forms on bricks is known as efflorescence. This occurs when moisture builds up inside the wall over time. The water inside the wall absorbs salt from the mortar. It then moves through the brick to the exterior where it evaporates. Once it dries, it leaves behind the salt which is the powder you see.
Cracks & Shifting Around Windows
If you notice sagging along headers or diagonal cracking at the corners of windows, this could be a sign of deterioration. A number of problems can cause this to occur, including failure of supporting shelf angles.
Missing Mortar & Joints
Mortar and joints should remain intact. Over time, general wear and tear can weaken the mortar and cause portions of it to break off. This will eventually weaken the structure. It’s a normal aging process but one that should be carefully monitored to prevent further damage.
You may notice small cracks in a brick wall. This may not be anything to worry about. However, large cracks could be a sign of a foundation problem. A foundation that shifts can put stress on brick and cause it to begin cracking.
