Every year, homeowners and contractors across Australia install decks and patios. Both platforms can expand the functionality of any outdoor space. Your garden will be far more inviting with an even platform to arrange furniture, lawn décor, and more. While they serve a similar purpose, each has pros and cons that you should know about before making a decision.
A Closer Look at Decking
Most decks are constructed using timber or vinyl. There are also composite materials available that are low maintenance. Decks are elevated, so they require supports and more structural planning. They can be anywhere from several inches to over a dozen feet or more off the ground. Most need rails added for safety.
Decks tend to have a high resale value however they are also higher maintenance overall and require staining, sealing, and power washing. If your property has uneven terrain, a deck may be ideal. It will provide a better view, especially when building a second-story layout. Wood also tends to absorb less sunlight, making them a little cooler.
A Closer Look at Paving
Patios sit directly on the ground. They can be as simple or complex as you want. Today, there are so many brick and paver styles available that it’s easy to build something that matches the architecture of your home. Paved patios cost less to install and don’t require as much maintenance beyond the occasional repair. Replacing a broken paver is a quick process that a novice can handle.
Patios will require even ground to install. If your garden isn’t even, you will need to excavate. Since they sit on the ground, you can easily landscape large bushes, trees, or even put in fencing for privacy. They can also last over 25 years. Most areas do not require a permit to build a patio.
Should I Install Decking or Paving?
You should ask yourself a few questions before deciding which method is best for you. If you:
- Have uneven ground that will be difficult to flatten
- Are working with a higher project budget
- Don’t mind the long-term maintenance costs
- Prefer a better view when using your outdoor space
…then a deck may be a better choice. On the other hand, if you:
- Have relatively even terrain that will require minimal prep
- Want to save money or have a low project budget
- Prefer minimal long-term maintenance with little to no cost
- Want to have the option of landscaping with privacy in mind
…then a patio made of pavers is going to be a better option. To learn more about pavers and building supplies, contact ABC Brick Sales. We can help you find everything from beautiful bricks to landscaping supplies and raw materials for your next decking or paving project.
